Akrotiri Flamingos 6 - Paphos Tigers 28
Tigers beat a tough
Flamingos side on a beautiful day at the RAF base. However, it was not
the most entertaining game as both sides struggled to achieve any
fluency.
Akrotiri opened the scoring with an early penalty but the Tigers soon
replied with a penalty of their own from Cone. Successful forward drives
by the Tigers ground down the Flamingos but when the Tigers backs were
brought into play moves were often halted by dropped passes or
nondescript kicking.
Indeed the Flamingos nearly scored with a long run out of defence by the
Flamingos centre who was only stopped by a stunning last-gasp tackle by
Mario Shattaoulos. The sides traded penalties to make the score 6-6 at
half time.
The Tigers had the slope in the second half and were rewarded quickly
with a try engineered by Deano who skilfully off loaded to Daryl
Richards for a nice forward’s try. Cone converted.
At last the back line put a move together that resulted in Mario
crossing the line but it was brought back to the disappointment of every
Tigers supporter for a forward pass.
Pressure by the Flamingos had the Tigers on the back foot but a typical
outrageous interception by Cone and a run for the length of the field
really deflate the home team. To add insult to injury Cone finished off
with a scoring dive over the line that Greg Luganis would have been
proud of.
George sealed the game when the ball finally got to him in space.
Setting off on one of his typical bruising runs, he ignored the easy,
conventional wing route to run straight through three defenders to score
near the posts for Cone to convert.
Mario won the Man of the Match award. |

Limassol Crusaders 0 - Paphos Tigers 103
Tigers won convincingly on Saturday
against a plucky Limassol side who (despite the score) gave a good
display of themselves in the first 20 minutes. However, the power game
of the Tigers gradually wore down the Crusaders and the floodgates
opened with the Tigers producing some scintillating rugby.
Man of the Match awarded by Crusaders was given to Deano for sheer hard
work and some punishing driving runs.
Tigers Man of the Match was awarded to young Daryl Fitzgerald who shone
with his creative and courageous rugby.
An excellent game was rounded off by the home side's fantastic
hospitality in the Crusaders bar. |

Paphos Tigers 45 - Ay Nic Stags 5
The Paphos Tigers
started their league season well with a convincing win over Ayios
Nikolaos Stags on Saturday. A big crowd of around 200 were entertained
by some enthusiastic rugby at the Kiniras Cypria Maris Sports Ground in
Geroskipou. A typical Tigers performance slowly ground down the
resistance of the visitors. Forward drives with Captain Tony Thoma,
Deano and Victor wore down the opposition and the Tigers gradually took
control. Rampaging runs by George Agathocleous and darting runs by ‘Man
of the Match’ Speedy tore holes in the Stags defence. Cone was once
again prominent in the lineout and Chris Thoma had some shuddering runs
at Fly Half. Daryl Richards looked comfortable and confident at full
back. The superior fitness of the Tigers was apparent and the lads have
Coach Daryl and fitness trainer (and BBQ King) Tony Calvert to thank for
that.
Overall, an impressively disciplined display by the Tigers who could
have a lot more points if some of their passes were more accurate.
The day was finished off with a great after match session at the ground
complete with bar, food and great music by ‘Wicked Willy’.
